1 Chronicles 24:1-26:11; Romans 4:1-12; Psalm 13:1-6; Proverbs 19:15-16

Your eyes may have started to glaze over as you read 1 Chronicles today. It is a series of priestly names connected to serving in the tabernacle/temple. Some priests served within the sacrificial system, some served with music, and some served as gatekeepers (we will read about other positions tomorrow). The main emphasis of the passage is that of service. All these men were assigned positions to serve God.

The most interesting verse to me is 1 Chronicles 25:8 which says, "Young and old alike, teacher as well as student, cast lots for their duties." When it comes to serving, skill level or age is not the most important requirement. The young student may have had remedial skills while the old teacher may have been extremely adept, yet both could serve. Skill is not a requirement for service! God has given all his children gifts which they are to use in his service. The purpose of their service is to help others grow and mature in their relationship with God. We might look at someone and think they have more gifts or are better skilled than us, but this is not an excuse to quit serving.

Instead, whether young or old, teacher or student, skilled or not, we are to serve. I would encourage you to find somewhere in the church or the community where you can serve on a regular basis. As his child, God has involved us in his work and called you to draw people to himself. So let us find ourselves in the legacy of Heman, Jehoiarib, and other servants of God.

God, my Father, thank you that you have called me your servant. Help me to make my life about you and others. Help me to serve by using the gifts, knowledge, and wisdom that you have given to me for the benefit of others. Use me for your glory today. Amen.

Question of the day: If you are not regularly serving, where can you start serving on a regular basis?
