Deuteronomy 29:2-31:29

The Israelites walked in a fog for 40 years. They did not realize their clothes did not have holes or frayed edges, their sandals did not deteriorate with use. As nomads they could not pick grapes and make wine, but God gave them water. They did not have to plant crops, but manna appeared every morning. These things happened so that they “might know the Lord (their) God,” (Deauteronomy 29:6) the one providing these life necessities. Moses said the Israelites had seen all this with their “own eyes,” yet, “to this day the LORD has not given (them) a mind that understands or eyes that see or ears that hear” (Deut. 29:3- 4).

What happened here? They were so full of disappointment, frustration, complaining, comparing, and judging they missed all of God’s provisions in life. Their callused hearts had failed to love God, “listen to his voice, and hold fast to him” (Deut. 30:20). Perhaps, they had let a root grow in their hearts that produced bitter poison (Deut. 29:18). In their disobedience and in saying, “I’ll live just the way I please, thank you,” (Deut. 29:14, MSG) their minds, eyes, and ears had missed God’s blessings and life, because “he is life itself ” (Deut. 30:20, MSG). Why continue in the fog when we can see the light? Why stumble when we can walk in faith? Let us walk seeing, remembering, and trusting all that God has done for us.

Father God, forgive me for the roots of complaining, comparing, and judging (fill in your vice). Amen.

Are you missing blessings because you are in a fog?
