Genesis 28:6-30:24

Everyone wants to be loved. This desire crosses cultures, genders, and the centuries. Esau, Leah, and Rachel all seek to find love and acceptance through a variety of means. Esau adds a non-Canaanite bride to his collection of wives thinking this will cause him to be loved by his parents. Leah certainly would have dealt with an inferiority complex. She had such "weak eyes" (almost certainly a euphemism for being unattractive) that she had to be married through deception. She then sought to earn her husband's love by producing children. Rachel sought approval and value through children as well, since her infertility made her feel unloved. Yet all these pursuits were unable to satisfy their desire to be loved. Their attempts were never enough to fill the void in their hearts.

No matter where we go for love and acceptance, if it is to the things of this world, we will never be satisfied. Ultimately only God can love us in the permanent, unconditional way that only he can. When we feel unloved, unworthy, or worthless, we can turn to God and rest in the love that he has for us.

Father God, thank you that I am loved by you. Thank you all my doubts can be washed away in the death of Jesus. You definitively proved your love of me by sending Jesus to die and rise for me. Thank you for your great love. Amen.

What keeps you from believing, receiving, and resting in God's love?

Thank you for such a reminder of God’s love for us. It’s amazing that He loves us so much!
