Exodus 4:18-7:13
God is a promise-maker and a promise-keeper. God promised the appropriately named Promised Land hundreds of years before Moses. He reminded the people again and again that he would bring them into a land of great blessing. When Moses and Aaron came to Egypt and reminded the people of God's promise, they grew excited and some of them probably began to pack with the expectation it was going to happen instantly. Instead, the immediate response of Pharaoh was not to release them and to increase the difficulty of their work. The Israelites flopped from belief to doubt as they assumed these promises would never be fulfilled. Even Moses questioned whether God was only increasing the trouble on the people and whether rescue would ever come.
God has the power to instantly and without difficulty fulfill his promises, but this is not the way he normally works. After his promise of one who would crush the snake in Genesis, it would be thousands of years before Jesus would come. The church has now been waiting two thousands years for Christ to return. Regardless of the length of time or the opposition that we face in the waiting, we must keep our eyes on God's faithfulness knowing, "The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient..." (2 Peter 3:9).
Father God, thank you for your faithfulness. I confess my doubts at times, so help me with my unbelief. Amen.
How can you increase your trust in God's promises in the face of difficult circumstances in life?
