Job 8:1-11:20
One of the major issues we see in the conversation between Job and his friends is the distinction between knowing the truth and applying it. As we look at Bildad’s and Zophar's statements we see they clearly understand God's justice and humanity's sinfulness. They comprehend these truths but misapply them to Job's situation. They believe that since God is just and we are sinful, Job must be receiving punishment for his sin. These faulty ideas affect their relationship with Job, and ultimately, their relationship with God.
We can fall into similar traps in our own lives. Just as Job could not see into heaven to understand the conversation between Satan and God, so we do not always understand the whys behind the circumstances of our lives. I have heard people tell someone that they must be sick because of hidden sin in their lives or their lack of faith. Ultimately every disease and broken aspect of the world is due to the sin of Adam and Eve but not necessarily due to our own personal sin. So, we need to learn to rest on God's truth while having humility that we do not understand everything. We need to trust in God, be humble and slow with our counsel to others, and be willing to often say, "I don't know."
Father God, thank you that you are always at work, even when I do not understand what you are doing, or why you allow certain things into my life. Help me to rely on you and not myself. Amen.
When have you found yourself misapplying God's truths in your life?
