Numbers 11:1-13:33
God never gives us more than we can handle. This is a popular phrase that is not actually in the Bible. It is the belief that God will never make our lives too difficult, painful, or hard —that life will be a breeze. The statement actually reflects far more of a 21st century American perspective than it does of anything in the Bible. Despite the newness of this phrase, a similar perspective is held by ten of the twelve spies who entered the Promised Land. They enter and discover both abundant food and abundant enemies. You might expect their response to be joy at the amazing land they can have; instead they believe that entering the land will lead to defeat. They will have to face walled cities, massive armies, and geographical obstacles, but God is on their side. The task is in fact more than they can handle, just like Moses' leadership position is more than he can handle, but, in both of those cases, God is with them. What they are unable to do on their own, God can do for them.
This is true for us as well. God will certainly take us into places where it is more than we can handle. Since nothing is too difficult for God, we can obey him, even when the odds are not in our favor.
Father God, thank you that you are with me. Help me to trust you, walk with you, and obey you, even when those things do not make sense. Thank you that you are able to do for me what I cannot do for myself. Amen.
When has God taken you into places that were more than you could handle? How God did reveal himself in that situation?
