Deuteronomy 6:1-9:29

Christians need to live with their heads on a swivel. We need to be constantly looking back to what God has done and looking forward to what he will do. Much of Scripture follows this pattern. It is a call to remember what God has done and trust him for what is yet to come. As Moses recounts what God has done in Deuteronomy, he is also looking forward to what God will do by bringing the people into the Promised Land. Notice how many times Moses speaks about what is about to happen or says when a particular action will occur. All these future events are undergirded by the reality of what God has already done. Israel was to continually look back and remember the concrete historical reality of the Exodus. This reminder of God's saving work in the past was meant to propel them to confidence that God would save them in similar ways in the future.

As Christians we can learn from the Exodus, but we are to primarily remember our exodus, which is God's saving work through Jesus. Jesus' past work of saving power becomes fuel for our present faith. The Israelites faced the obstacles of nations in the land, idolatry, and lack of faith. We face obstacles of all shapes and sizes, but the more we remember what God has done, the more we can trust God in the face of our giants.

Father God, thank you for what you have done. Thank you that you have rescued me from sin through the work of Jesus. Help me to remember nothing I face will ever be greater than you. Amen.

How should God's past work in your life increase your trust in him today?

God pursued me while I was oblivious to him, God revealed himself to me while I was busy living a life of sin.

nHow much i can trust in him now that I have invited him into my heart and made him the center of my life.
