Numbers 32:1-33:56
We encounter two names listed as examples of lives lived out of deep commitment and trust in God. Caleb and Joshua “followed the LORD wholeheartedly” (Numbers 32:12) and were the only two allowed to enter the Promised Land from the original group that had left Egypt. Amid a sea of grumbling, discontentment, and idolatry, we see two men rise above. Regardless of the community around you, you can choose to follow in the footsteps of Caleb and Joshua. The more we recognize the surpassing greatness and beauty of Christ, the more we will long to follow him with all we have and all we are.
The ultimate thing which keeps us from this wholehearted commitment is sin. Moses bluntly confronts the people in their sin and tells them “you may be sure that your sin will find you out” (Numbers 32:23). We often try to hide our sin, but it will always be found out. Instead the path forward is confession and repentance. God's grace is greater than our sin, so acknowledge the sin and lack of following Christ wholeheartedly in your life, and commit afresh to him. Then choose to surround yourself with Calebs and Joshuas. Find people who will encourage you to follow the Lord with your whole heart and not to mess around with sin. Let us trust God, offer ourselves to do his will, and go out into the world as disciples who make disciples.
Lord, help me be like Caleb and Joshua and follow you wholeheartedly. Today I want to emulate your example and do your will.
