1 Samuel 4:12-8:22

Eli discovers his sons are dead and the ark has been taken. As a result of their disobedience the people of God have been defeated and Eli dies heartbroken. His daughter-inlaw gives birth to a child, Ichabod, which means “the glory has departed” (1 Samuel 4:21). Things seem grim, but even during these terrible times there is hope. God has raised up Samuel who is listening and willing to share God’s message in its entirety even though it was difficult and unpopular. Samuel’s obedience allowed God to use him greatly and even lead the people of Israel to victory when they had turned back to the Lord.

When we are surrounded by trouble, it can feel like there is no hope. However, no matter how much trouble you are in, there is always hope. Hope is the confident expectation of God’s ultimate blessing in this life and in eternity, evidenced by his goodness and promises. We need to listen and be willing to follow God’s calling in our lives regardless of the circumstances around us.

God, help me to listen carefully to your word and boldly speak your truth that others may also find hope in your word. Amen.

How have you responded when God has asked you to speak or to take a stand?
