Leviticus 25:24-26:46

God places a high value on redemption and restoration as evidenced in His provision of the Year of Jubilee (every 50th year) for the Israelites. The Year of Jubliee presented a fresh opportunity to win freedom from slavery and regain property hard times had caused them to lose. In non- Jubliee years, God made provision for redemption through the kinsman-redeemer, a close relative who was willing to pay the price to restore land or free slaves. What a beautiful picture of redemption this is, foreshadowing the redeeming work of Jesus Christ. He came to pay the ultimate redemption price for our sins and win our freedom from sin’s bondage. Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross demonstrates that he became our kinsman-redeemer when He laid down His life to save us from the slavery of sin and the losses it can wreak on our lives.

When we come to Jesus in faith, we can experience the joy God’s people must have felt in that wonderful year of Jubilee. The best news is we do not have to wait fifty years for that to happen–we can make the choice at any time in our lives and can continue the rest of our lives to rejoice in our freedom. Truly, as the gospel song says, “Jesus is our Jubilee.”

Lord, how thankful I am that You became my kinsman-redeemer, willing to pay the price for my redemption and fill my life with Jubilee joy. Thank You that as I live in joyful obedience to you, you bring blessings to my life, even in difficult times. Amen.

How can remembering the joy of the Year of Jubilee coming into my life through Jesus spur me to live a life characterized by grateful obedience to Him?
