Leviticus 27:1-34; Numbers 1:1-54

. "There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry, Mine!"(Abraham Kuyper) We so often divide up the world into secular and sacred─things to which God is concerned/attentive, and areas of life irrelevant to God. God’s heart is far different than this perspective; God cares about everything. As we start the book of Numbers, we see in the form of a census that everything matters to God. Moses is told to count all the men twenty and over. The Levites are not counted at this point because their work was focused on the tabernacle (i.e., what we consider sacred), but the men who were to serve in the army were just as critical as those with spiritual work. Imagine the Israelites going into the Promised Land with a tabernacle and no army. Certainly, God could have done it this way, but God wants everyone to play a role.

Within the church, the body of Christ, each of us plays a vital, essential role. We may feel like our job is irrelevant or nonexistent, but just like the nation of Israel, every one of us matters and is needed. Since Christ is king, he is king over us, over our gifts, over the church, and over every part of our lives. So let us do everything for his glory.

Father God, help me to live with Christ as king over every part of my life and live as his humble servant. Help me to live out of the gifts your Spirit has given to me and to recognize I need others and others need me. Amen.

How essential do you feel you are to the church? Does your opinion match what God says?
