Deuteronomy 1:1-3:20

Today begins the book of Deuteronomy. The name literally is deutero which means two and nomy from nomos which means law, so essentially the law a second time. The book will recount the works of God and his law which was given to the Israelites as has previously been described in Exodus, Leviticus and Numbers. If you wonder about the importance of this part of the Old Testament, remember when Jesus was confronted by Satan he quoted from the book of Deuteronomy three times in response to the lies of Satan. Further, if there are aspects that we seem to have read before, consider our need for repetition. It was not enough for Israel to hear God's truth once, they needed to hear it a second (deutero), third, fourth, and fifth time.

We also need to hear God's word again and again, so we can apply it in new and fresh ways. So as you read, remind yourself of who God is, the truth he has given us, and the difference it should make in our lives.

Father God, thank you for your patience with me. Thank you for continually reminding me of your character and works. Help me to remember who you are, what you call me to, and live in accordance with that. Help me to be the person that Christ died to make me. Amen.

Why do we need to be reminded of God and his commands repeatedly? How can you keep firmly in mind what God has called you to be?
