Joshua 19:49-21:45; 1 Chronicles 6:54-81
Much of the Old Testament is a shadow of the greater reality we find in Jesus. We see that in two ways in our reading today. The first is the idea of inheritance. Joshua is given an inheritance in the Promised Land for his role as a faithful leader over the people. Those in Christ are given an inheritance that exceeds significantly that of Joshua. Our inheritance is an eternal home, an eternal place in God's family, and a reward that will last forever. Similarly, the next section of Joshua describes the cities of refuge. The Israelites had a place to flee to gain refuge from the penalty of death.
In Christ we have a far greater city of refuge. In Jesus we have a refuge that removes the penalty of eternal death/separation from God. When we are in Christ we are permanently in a place where the fear of judgment can be removed and replaced with the certainty that we are God's permanent children, and do not need to fear death and the grave. What great blessings we have in Christ and what a great refuge and inheritance we have in him.
Father God, thank you that in Christ I have an eternal inheritance that awaits me; therefore, no matter what life throws at me, I can be filled with peace, joy, and hope. Thank you for your gifts and, most significantly, the gift of your Son and the Spirit. Amen.
Having read through nearly six books of the Old Testament, what are some of the elements of these books that are shadows of the greater reality that is found in Jesus?
