2 Kings 23:31-25:30; Acts 22:17-23:10; Psalm 2:1-12; Proverbs 18:13

It is interesting that as we celebrate the founding of America and freedom today, we read about the destruction of Judah and the end of its freedom. We read of multiple kings being imprisoned, the nation being exiled and Paul’s bondage in Acts 22-23. Despite the physical bondage of these people, true freedom is not granted by any nation on Earth but by God. As we think about the freedom we have in America, we should see this as a mere shadow of what true freedom looks like. Our world often defines freedom as the ability to do whatever we want, while God’s freedom is the ability to walk in abundant life. He is the one we need to seek and he is the overflowing fountain of freedom.

Psalm 2 points us to the source of our freedom, God. This psalm shows us that freedom comes not in our relationship with earthly laws but with our heavenly king. Much of today’s world is pictured in verses 1-3 as those who seek to overthrow the morality and kingship of God, but this is a losing proposition. God is the eternal king, and he is the one we are to submit to. He is the one in verses 11-12 that we are to serve and love. When we feel anxious, afraid, or in bondage, let us turn to Christ and in doing so “kiss the Son” who alone can give us the freedom we seek.

God, my Father, thank you that freedom is found in you. Help me not to walk in bondage to sin but seek you and your kingdom. Thank you that through the power of your Holy Spirit, I can overcome and walk in the newness of life. Amen.

Question of the day: How can you learn to walk in the true freedom that Jesus offers?
