2 Kings 6:1-7:20; Acts 15:36-16:15; Psalm 142:1-7; Proverbs 17:24-25
Many of us wear glasses or contacts. We need assistance to see accurately. The same idea is true for us spiritually. We need assistance to see things from God’s perspective.
In 2 Kings 6 Elisha and his servant find themselves surrounded by an army focused on their capture. When the servant only sees the physical reality of their situation, he is overwhelmed by fear; while Elisha can have peace, because he sees the greater spiritual reality. Being able to see from God’s perspective changes everything.
No matter what the physical realities we face in life, our unseen God is there. No matter how overwhelming the odds may be, God's presence means the odds are always in his favor. In fact, the outcomes are always going to be what God has determined and, ultimately, will always be for his glory.
Notice David expressing similar sentiments in Psalm 142. Everywhere he looks he sees people focused on his demise, just like Elisha and the servant. However, in the end, he comes to see God as his refuge. He is able to see the peace that God brings even in the midst of difficult circumstances. This should give us hope and encouragement for our lives as well. Since God is with us, we can always have peace, joy, and hope. We just need to see him more clearly than everything else.
God, my Father, thank you that you are real. Thank you for always being with me, even during overwhelming situations. Help me to rely on you and “see” you at all times. Help me not to be led by my fear of this world but by your greater power. Amen.
Question of the day: What can enable your eyes to see the greater spiritual realities in life?
