2 Kings 22:3-23:30; Acts 21:37-22:16; Psalm 1:1-6; Proverbs 18:11-12

Be a tree. No, this is not a call to be a background character in a children’s play but the exhortation of Psalm 1. We are called to place our roots in an ever-flowing stream of water and produce lives of abundant fruit. The thing which our roots are to be connected to is Scripture. Psalm 1:2 tells us to “delight in the law of the Lord, and on his law meditate(s) day and night.” We are to draw life by being deeply rooted in God and his truth.

A powerful example of this is Josiah in 2 Kings 22. When he encountered the "Book of the Law" he unwaveringly obeyed it. He was willing to go against 300 years of tradition to do what the Scriptures said. When God spoke, he acted and did so in deep humility. He easily could have continued in the pattern of idolatry stretching back to Solomon but instead chose to draw life and direction from God.

The same commitment should be true in our lives as well. Congrats on making it more than halfway through the Bible so far this year, but we are called to more than just reading. We are called to root our lives in God and his truth so that we can be like a healthy tree.

God, my Father. Help me to draw life and direction from you. Help me to be led by you and learn to be like a tree. Amen.

Question of the day: How can you live like a tree today?
