2 Kings 10:32-12:21; Acts 18:1-22; Psalm 145:1-21; Proverbs 18:1
Joash is made king at the whopping age of seven. Obviously, at that age, his rule was mediated by others, specifically Jehoiada the priest. Without these leaders in his life, Joash probably would have functioned like someone running for elementary school president where he is demanding soda out of drinking fountains and pizza every day for lunch.
Yet because of godly influences in his life, especially Jehoiada, he was able to lead well. 2 Kings 12:2 says, "Joash did what was right in the eyes of the Lord all the years Jehoiada the priest instructed him." Joash's ability to lead rightly is tied to the influences he had in his life.
We may think that young people are especially prone to external influences, but the truth is that all of us are. We all need people who are pointing us to Christ in our lives, or we are prone to drift. Even Paul in Acts 18 has Aquila and Priscilla to support him. Then in Psalm 145 we are told of the need for “one generation [to] commend your works to another; they will tell of your might acts.” So let us intentionally cultivate Christ-centered relationships where we are continually challenged and encouraged to put Christ first in our lives.
This is what happens in connection groups at church. People gather to discuss the Bible and the impact it should have on our lives. They also meet to know and pray for each other. If you are not in a group, I would encourage you to join in August so that you can add a few Jehoiadas into your life.
God, my Father, give me wisdom to find people to encourage me in my walk with you. Help me to invite people into my life to speak truth and refine me. Thank you for friends and family that I have who do this and help me to continue to see my need for others to lead, mentor, and encourage me. Amen.
Question of the day: Who functions as a "Jehoiada" (spiritual mentor) in your life?
