1 Kings 2:1-3:2; Acts 5:1-42; Psalm 125:1-5; Proverbs 16:25
"There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end, it leads to death." When we make ourselves the final authority over our decisions and actions, Proverbs 16:25 tells us that the result is not going to be desirable. This roughly sums up the final exhortation which David gives to Solomon. He reminds him that his effectiveness as king will be utterly tied to his obedience to God.
Obedience is recognizing that even as king he is not the final authority or power, but God is. Solomon may have more earthly authority than anyone, but it pales in comparison to that of God. Therefore, his posture needs to be that of submission, humility, and obedience to the clear commands of God.
Peter and the apostles express this attitude before the Sanhedrin when they are told for a second time to stop talking about Jesus. They state, "We must obey God rather than men!" They know to whom their ultimate allegiance and obedience is to be given.
The same is true of us. Every day God gives us a plethora of opportunities to choose to obey him. In doing so, he gives us further opportunities to draw closer to him and grow our faith. We need to continually recognize his authority and choose to obey him over our emotions or desire to please others. We are called to complete surrender, unlike Ananias and Sapphira. They thought they could have it both ways. That they could live for themselves and God. That they could look religious while having hearts that were far from God. So instead let us live completely surrendered to God and never fail to put him first in our lives.
God, my Father, thank you that you are the king over the universe and king of me. Help me to continually acknowledge that your way is the best path for my life. Help me to submit my desires under your lordship and in doing so experience your abundant life. Amen.
Question of the day: What areas of life are you tempted to make yourself rather than God the final authority?
