Nehemiah 7:73-9:21; 1 Corinthians 9:1-18; Psalm 33:12-22; Proverbs 21:11-12
"If only..." You can easily think that if only circumstances were different then your life would be better. You might think if only I were married, or had kids, or had a different job, or could retire...then my life would be so much better. Though there may be things you could or should change in your life, abundant life is only found in Christ. It is not found in anything this world can offer but in Christ alone.
I love the way Psalm 33 puts it, "No king is saved by the size of his army; no warrior escapes by his great strength. A horse is a vain hope for deliverance...but the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him." The king and warrior think that their army or strength or horses will allow them to experience victory, i.e. abundant life, but the psalmist makes clear that it is only found in God. Rather than thinking we can create change that betters our lives, let us look to God where it is really found. Hope, joy, purpose, and meaning are all found in him, and him alone. So don’t look to inferior substitutes for that which only God can give.
Father God, thank you that all life comes from you. Thank you that you created life and are the one who gives me eternal life. Help me to always look to you, rather than myself or this world to give me life. Keep my eyes fixed on you. Amen.
Question of the day: Why do we think that changed circumstances rather than a closer relationship with God allow us to experience abundant life?
