2 Chronicles 6:12-8:10; Romans 7:14-8:8; Psalm 18:1-15; Proverbs 19:24-25
God is very different from us─“there is no God like you in heaven or on earth.” Notice the attributes ascribed to him in 2 Chronicles and Psalm 18. Solomon describes God as always faithful to his promises. Even in the face of the rebellion of Israel and Judah, God remembered what he had promised and brought about the fulfillment of his covenant promises. In this faithfulness he patiently forgives us again and again. He does this because his love endures forever. Further, he is a God who always hears our cries. We struggle to listen to the people sitting right in front of us. If your conversations are anything like mine, there is a lot of, “What did you say?” However, God always hears, always understands, and always responds. Then in Psalm 18 David describes God as our strength, fortress, deliverer, rock, shield, and salvation.
In contrast, Romans 7 describes us as unable to do the good we want to do. While God is faithful, we are rebels. Even when we know that God’s way is the best, we obey his will imperfectly. Thankfully though, God’s grace is greater than our sin, and his Spirit is more powerful than our flesh. So let us rejoice in God’s presence, power, love, and grace, and live through the power of his Spirit rather than relying on ourselves. Thankfully there is only one God and it is not us!
Father God, thank you for who you are. Thank you that I can always rely on you, trust in you, and call out to you. Help me to live through the power of your Spirit and through you, overcome my sin, struggles, and flesh. Help me to seek your glory in all things. Amen.
Question of the day: How should recognizing God’s character transform the way you live?
