1 Chronicles 1:1-2:17; Acts 23:11-35; Psalm 3:1-8; Proverbs 18:14-15
A young woman we know told us that one morning she had three of her four children in their van on the way to school. She was trying to make a left-hand turn out of their community, but the road was busy as usual, and she found herself growing impatient and angry. Finally, in frustration she decided just to pull out, only to find a large truck bearing down on them. As she hurriedly approached a safe lane, she swears she felt the van jump out of the path of the oncoming truck. Her heart pounding, she vowed never to pull out in anger again.
All of us have had experiences when we knew God’s hand of protection moved swiftly on our behalf. Paul experienced this many times during his ministry. In this instance, his Roman citizenship gave him powerful protection, prompting the commander to quickly move him to a safe place when his life was threatened.
David also experienced this over and over, as God consistently protected him from those who would kill him. This assurance allowed him to confidently call out to the Lord, and then go to sleep without being kept awake by fear. He knew he was God’s anointed and that God was on his side.
As believers, we enjoy the privilege of being part of God’s family, knowing that we rest securely in God’s hands. While this does not mean we should act foolishly or in anger, it does mean we can be boldly confident as we live out our lives for Him. “What ifs” don’t need to torment our rest as long as we focus on the safety and deliverance God offers us.
How grateful we are, Lord, for your mighty hand of protection on our lives. Help us to act with confidence and be able to live securely, trusting in the safety of Your unending love. Bless us with peaceful nights despite the terrors and anxieties of this world, knowing You are completely in control of every aspect of our lives. Amen
Question of the Day: When we wake up with anxiety in the middle of the night, how might David’s confidence that he will not fear “though tens of thousands assail me on every side” help us regain our confidence in God’s deliverance?
