2 Kings 3:1-4:17; Acts 14:8-28; Psalm 140:1-13; Proverbs 17:22
One of my seminary professors, Jim Allman, used to say, “What God has done in the past is a model and a promise of what He will do in the future, though He is too creative to do the same thing the same way twice.”
God’s miraculous powers and his creativity are displayed in the historical books of the Bible. We see numerous miraculous healings but there are differences in nearly every one of these miracles. Sometimes they touch the person, other times they heal from a distance, and sometimes they simply speak a word. We also see that in the ministries of Elijah and Elisha. God provided through Elijah for a poor woman and her family by refilling their jars each morning, but in Elisha's case, God provided oil by filling up every jar the woman could find at one time. The ultimate result was the same, God provided for the needy, but he did not do it in the exact same way.
Oftentimes, we want God to do exactly what he has done before and to do it in the exact same way. We may even find ourselves disappointed when God does not do it the way we wanted. What is important, though, is we learn to trust the God who provides. He may not provide in the way we want or to the degree that we would desire, but he is always faithful as our provider. Let us learn to trust and praise our God who meets our deepest needs.
God, my Father, thank you that you faithfully provide for your people and me. Thank you for always being faithful in the past and that you always will be in the future. Thank you for always doing what is best for me and help me to see, acknowledge, and praise you for all you have done and are doing. Amen.
Question of the day: What does it say about God and his character that he does not always do things the same way?
