2 Samuel 19:11-20:13; John 21:1-25; Psalm 120:1-7; Proverbs 16:16-17

Today's psalm is the first in a series entitled the Psalms of Ascent. Psalms 120-134 were recited by people as they traveled to Jerusalem for various feasts and celebrations throughout the year. Regardless of one’s path to Jerusalem, one would always ascend in elevation, thus the title.

These psalms functioned to remind the travelers of God's heart and desire for their lives.
This first psalm reminds us that in times of trouble, God is where we are to turn. He is the one who can deliver us from even the most desperate of situations or the vilest of people. The primary predicament that the psalmist finds himself in is being surrounded by people failing to pursue the things that God desires. These people speak in ways that tear apart relationships and pursue division, rather than peace. He is trying to stand strong for God but finds it difficult because of the culture he lives in. We may resonate with this idea! Regardless of our situation, we are to turn our eyes upward to God.

As the pilgrims walking to Jerusalem repeated this psalm, they would have remembered God’s superiority and his design for their lives. Living in southwest Florida we will not do much ascending physically but we are called to allow our hearts and thoughts to ascend to God.

Father God, I pray that you would give me a heart for the things of you. Help me to pursue peace, speak in love, and ultimately seek you. Help me to live for you today and be a beacon of love, kindness, and unity wherever I go. Help me through your Spirit to make you known. Amen.

Question of the day: How can you better keep in mind the greatness of God throughout the day?
