1 Kings 18:1-46; Acts 11:1-30; Psalm 135:1-21; Proverbs 17:12-13
God is greater. It does not matter what our circumstances are or what our feelings are saying, God is greater than our present situation. Obadiah is a man of God who has done amazing things to protect God's people, yet he becomes overwhelmed by fear at the possibility of being murdered by Ahab. Shortly after, Elijah is pitted in a cosmic battle against 450 prophets of Baal. We do not know how Elijah was feeling during this confrontation, but we do know that he had no doubts concerning God revealing his power. He even allowed his sacrifice to be watered down because he knew God's power. Then in Acts 11 we see racial prejudice play out in some believers being wary or doubtful of Gentiles being able to come to faith in Christ. These situations of difficulty and confusion, ultimately, become a place for God’s power to be displayed.
We will face a myriad of situations in life that raise our fear level or, at minimum, cause anxiety to well up in our hearts. It may be a health scare, fear of losing a loved one, having enough money for retirement, watching the craziness in our culture play out, or any number of other issues. What we must always cling to is the fact God is greater.
He is greater than our health worries, he is greater than the possible or actual death of a loved one, he is greater than our financial situation, and he is greater than the craziness of our world. So let us heed the command of Psalm 135 to praise God that he is greater than anything we can ever face in this world.
God, my Father, thank you that you are greater than everything. Thank you that I have seen your power in my life and all around me. Help me today to remember you are greater than what I face and learn to trust and praise you at all times. Amen.
Question of the day: What is a situation in your life where you need to remember God is greater?
