1 Chronicles 4:5-5:17; Acts 25:1-27; Psalm 5:1-12; Proverbs 18:19
There are moments in life when we all feel lonely. We can feel lonely when we are surrounded by people or when we are all by ourselves. Loneliness may come from an emotional distance from people or a lack of physical proximity.
Psalm 5 points us to an antidote for loneliness which is God’s presence. When we remember that God is always with us, and always hears us, we never need to feel lonely. Even when we feel misunderstood or abandoned by others, God is with us and knows what we are going through. In verse 3, David reflects on the fact that God always hears us and responds to our requests in a way that is best. In 1 Chronicles we come across the example of Jabez who called out to God for blessing and protection, and God heard and responded. He may not always respond affirmatively to our requests as he did to Jabez, but he always hears and responds.
As we consider God’s presence it should produce joy. Notice in Psalm 5:11, that despite horrendous circumstances and the opposition of many, David still has joy because of the unchanging character of God. No matter what happens in life, he can cling to God because he hears and is present. In the same way, we can learn to experience joy today because as believers God is with us.
God, my Father, thank you that you are with me. So many people come and go in life, but you are always here. Help me when I feel alone to remember your presence and to lean on you through the difficulties of life. Amen.
Question of the day: How does the presence of God bring joy, even during difficulty?
