1 Kings 1:1-53; Acts 4:1-37; Psalm 124:1-8; Proverbs 16:24

In the Lord’s prayer, Jesus calls for us to pray that God’s will might be done on Earth as it is in heaven. We are to submit our desires before his. Today’s reading takes us to someone who rebels against the will of the king and others who are willing to do whatever it takes to glorify God. First, we see the example of Adonijah. He, like his brother Absalom, sought to be ruler over Israel even though this was contrary to the will of the king. He sought his own power, fame, and glory, rather than submitting to the king’s desire.

In contrast, we have the examples of Peter and John. When positioned before the hostile religious authorities, they vowed to continue to preach Christ even if it meant persecution, arrest, or death. They were willing to follow Christ as their king and ultimate authority, regardless of the consequences. They stated, “Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God’s sight to obey you rather than God. For we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.” Similarly, we are to submit our lives before Christ as king and follow him no matter where it takes us.

Question of the day: What would a life lived in greater submission to Christ look like?

God, my Father, help me to surrender my will and desires before you. Help me to follow and obey you and find my ultimate joy and purpose in you. Amen.
