Matthew 20:29-21:22

Who is Jesus? The validity of our answer determines our eternal destiny. In Jesus’ day, most of the crowds failed to understand who Jesus was. The crowds proclaimed Jesus to be simply a prophet (a Muslim view of Jesus), the Pharisees thought he was a blasphemer (similar to atheists), and the crowds in Jericho thought he would not care about the plight of blind men (like deists who believe in a distant, uncaring God). Amid these “majority opinions” there are always a few anomalies that recognize who Jesus truly is and respond appropriately. The blind men refuse to give in to the peer pressure of the crowds and cry out for Jesus until they are healed. They realize that he is the only one who can save them from their plight.

It is always easier to conform to the crowds, but this will always have us keeping Jesus at a distance. When I was in India, I met a woman who was the only Christian in her family and she led a Children’s Bible Club in her parent’s home; in this home, there was a room devoted as a shrine to a pantheon of Hindu gods. Rather than conforming to the beliefs of her parents, she rose up to not only follow Jesus but use her idol-filled house as a place where the Gospel was going forth. What a powerful example of refusing to conform and instead, make Jesus Lord over all things.

Father God, thank you for the comfort I get in knowing Jesus is king. Help me to passionately pursue you. Amen.

How do you find cultural views of Jesus and the spiritual apathy of others affecting your walk with Jesus?
