Mark 3:31-4:25

When someone asks you who you are, what do you share? You may talk about your job, your children, the city you are from, but do you ever share you are part of God’s family? When you place your faith in Christ, one of the things that happens is you are brought into a brand-new family. Jesus’ physical family rejected him as Messiah early in his ministry, but Jesus says “whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.” None of us have perfect earthly families or even perfect church families, but we are part of God’s eternal and someday perfect family. At salvation, we are brought into God’s invisible family, and the church is a tangible reflection of this by giving us a group of people who care about us, prays for us, supports us, and helps us grow.

Being a part of a family brings with it responsibility. In our spiritual families we are to worship with them, connect in Christ-centered ways, and serve. Therefore, we need to view the church not as an optional social club, but as a necessary ingredient in our spiritual life. We need other people to help us grow and they need us. Further, we are to be a part of enlarging God’s family by producing a crop “thirty, sixty, or even a hundred times.” We are to be a part of God’s family marked by being a disciple who makes disciples.

Father God, thank you for not only giving me eternal life but also gifting me a spiritual family. Help me to prioritize this family with my time and service. Amen.

How should seeing the church as your family change the way you view it?
