Matthew 5:27-48
Doctors can give you an assessment to determine your heart health. They can examine your history, an EKG result, and a number of other factors to determine your likelihood of having a cardiac event. Jesus in his sermon wants us to examine our heart health, not physically but spiritually. So, what is your spiritual heart health? Jesus first points out that the health of our heart is revealed in what we long for. Are we cultivating a heart that seeks God and his beauty or the things of this world whether in materialism or sex? We then see that the health of our heart is revealed in our commitments. Jesus uses marriage to show that the things we commit to have a powerful way of shaping our lives and our hearts. These commitments can be in relationships or in promises. Jesus wants our hearts to follow through on everything we say whether or not we swear or promise to do what we said. A healthy heart is marked by truthfulness and integrity. Finally, a healthy heart is revealed in serving and loving those who are hard to love. A heart transformed by Jesus is willing to love, serve, and go beyond what is required to value others.
If we desire a relationship with God and have been transformed by him, then our character and our hearts should reflect his. When people see us, they should see the God behind us, and hopefully come to praise him like we do.
Father God, give me your heart. Help my life, desires, and heart to be conformed to you. Amen.
How would you evaluate the health of your heart and how can you better pursue the healthy heart which God wants you to have?
