Matthew 24:29-51

As Jesus heads to the cross, he makes a point of instructing his disciples about his return. He wants this final event of human history to transform their lives. The return of Christ is not meant to be an abstract theological concept but a life transforming reality. Jesus gives two specific applications regarding his return. First, we are to be watchful. We are to have our eyes open, because we don't know when he will return. This watchfulness should impact the way we view life, shape our desires, and impact our behavior. Second, we are to be good stewards. We are to graciously receive all God has given to us and use it for his glory. God's gifts include our material possessions, our intellect, our talents, and our relationships. We are to use all these things well, rather than squandering them. We are not to see money as a tool for only our own pleasure, or our intellect to be used only for ourselves; rather we should do all things to bless others and bring praise to God. Is this how you are using things? The more we remember the immanency of Jesus' return, the more intentional we should be in all we do. Like a guard on a wall, we should be living watchful for Christ’s return; and like a faithful servant, we should be living to please our master at his return.

Father God, help me to remember that Jesus is coming back soon. Help this to give me joy, hope, and an intentionality to do all things in a way that is pleasing to you. Amen.

How can you be a better watchman and servant while waiting for Jesus to return?
