Matthew 21:23-46

Who has authority to go into your house if you are not there? Who has the authority to go into your fridge and take some food without asking? Authority determines what someone is allowed to do. One of the questions which the Pharisees wrestled with was whether Jesus had the authority to back up his claims. Was he a blasphemer or the Son of God? Jesus revealed his identity in a subtle way by telling two parables. Both stories speak of sons and vineyards, and both illustrate that one’s relationship with the father and the landowner determine their destiny. Those who respond to the rightful authority over their lives will receive fullness of life now and eternity in the future, those who reject his authority “will be crushed” (v.44).

Our willingness to submit all areas of our life to Jesus comes in part from a recognition of his authority. As our creator and king, we should joyfully surrender everything to him. One of the most common reasons people leave Christianity is because of their unwillingness to submit to God's authority. They want to run the show, be their own boss, and do as they please. This attitude makes us the ultimate authority instead of God, which will ultimately lead us to opposing God and being under his judgment. Therefore, let us assign to Jesus the place which he deserves as king over all our lives.

Father God, you are the ultimate authority over the Earth and over me. Help me to submit every part of my life to you. Amen.

How can you remember Jesus’ authority over your life, and what part of your life do you need to surrender to him today?
