Mark 1:1-28

Where would you begin your life story? You might begin it with your birth, with some distant ancestor, with your first memory, or with a significant early event in your life. As we read through the four Gospels, we will discover they all begin in a different place. Matthew began with Abraham (a distance ancestor of Jesus) while Mark began with John the Baptist, a relative of Jesus. The significance of John the Baptist is his role to pave the way for the arrival of Jesus. When someone comes to visit our homes, we make necessary preparations─we clean our house, prepare a meal, and get everything just right. In the same way, John the Baptist came to prepare for Jesus through his message of repentance. Repentance involves turning from something to embrace something else. In this case, it was to turn from sin and a life without God, and embrace Christ as the Messiah, Lord, and King. John was preparing hearts to receive Jesus.

Jesus is worthy of this place in all our lives because of who he is. He is the unique, eternal Son of God. He is the only one who was able to faithfully defeat Satan. He is the only one who brings God’s eternal kingdom to us and gives each of us an invitation to join him. So let us receive Christ as ruler over every aspect of our lives and repent of all misguided priorities.

Father God, help me to embrace you as supreme in my life. Help me to embrace your Son as king, and your Spirit as the one who leads my life. Help me to submit every part of my life to you. Amen.

What competes with Christ at the center of your life and how can you repent of these things?
