Luke 1:1-25

What evidence would you need to believe in Jesus? This is an important question to ask non-Christians. It is important for them to acknowledge what would move them from an unwilling belief, to faith in Christ. Luke begins his Gospel by describing first how his writing was compiled. Like a modern journalist he interviewed eyewitnesses to the accounts to understand what happened. He did not create the stories or embellish legends, but instead “carefully investigated everything from the beginning.” In his work he would have interviewed the apostles, Mary, and others who witnessed the life of Jesus from the beginning. Therefore, his writing can be trusted because of the source evidence which he used.

Further, we see not only how he compiled his writing but why he did it. His purpose in writing was "so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught." Luke wanted his readers, and us, to know that we can believe what we are reading. God wants us to move from doubt to certainty and from unbelief to faith. So, as we read through Luke’s writings, let us consider how it helps us to trust in the validity of what Christ has done.

Father God, help me to believe your Scriptures. Help me study, meditate, and apply all that I read. Thank you that I can have confidence that Jesus came into this world, died, and rose for me. Amen.

What would those around you say they need in order to believe? Is there any role you can play in helping them?
