Matthew 22:1-33

To live life well we must know the truth. Life and people throw questions at us that we need to be able to answer well. Towards the end of Jesus’ ministry, he is asked a series of questions. The first question is a political question where the Pharisees attempted to paint him into a corner by forcing him to acknowledge whether his allegiance was to Rome or his Jewish brethren. Yet Jesus masterfully answered the question by saying that some things, like money, should be given to the state, since it is a creation of the state. Other things, like people, are a creation of God, and should be given to him. As a coin bears the image of Caesar, so we bear the image of God; therefore, we should be used for God’s purposes.

To answer this question well, Jesus had to understand something about God (theology) and something about us (anthropology). In order to answer the second question well, Jesus had to understand Scripture and God’s character. The way Jesus answered shows us that understanding God and his character is crucial to our ability to answer life’s questions well. So let us know God, seek him, and do all things for his glory.

Father God, help me to live as a proper response to who you are. Help me to live by your grace and for your glory. Amen.

Reflect on your day. Were there any thoughts or actions which a deeper knowledge of God would have changed?
