Mark 14:53-72
Who is Jesus? We have seen this question come up throughout Jesus’ ministry and hopefully that question comes up in our conversations with people who are far from Christ. This question is essential, because the answer leads someone to an eternity with Christ or an eternity apart from him. As Jesus’ faux trial before the Sanhedrin occurred, they were looking for any evidence that might convict him. Unlike our judicial system that presumes innocence, they were willing to twist, contort, and make up evidence to send him to the Romans that he might be killed. Ultimately, what brought them to a place of conviction was Jesus answering the question of who he was.
He answered the question about whether he was the Christ by saying, “I am…and you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.” Jesus proclaimed himself to be the Messiah and even divine in the language that he was enthroned with God the Father and riding on the clouds. Jesus was willing to answer who he was, even when it led to his death. In contrast, Peter tried to do everything he could to not answer the question of who Jesus was. In these contrasting ways of responding to Jesus’ identity, we see what we are called to do. We should acknowledge Jesus, share him with others, and remember the central place he should have in our lives.
Father God, help me to always remember and acknowledge Jesus. Help me to share him with others and live for his glory. Amen.
What causes you to fail to acknowledge who Jesus is publicly before others?
