Matthew 6:25-7:14

Worry is a chronic issue in most of our lives. We find ourselves filled with anxiety that does not seem to dissipate and struggle to experience the freedom and life which Christ has made available to us. Beautifully, Jesus gives us a way to live that can overcome worry. Jesus tells us not to feed our worry but to “seek first his kingdom and his righteousness.” In seeking to motivate us to this better way of life, Jesus gives us a few reasons to pursue him rather than worry.

First, he tells us we should not worry because our causes for concern are not the most important things in life. We are wasting our time when we are worrying about insignificant things. Second, we are not to worry because God provides. As he provides for animals and plants, even more he will provide for his children who he loves. We need to embrace this mentality of believing that God will take care of our needs and, because this is so, we do not need to worry. Third, we are to throw away worry because it does not help anything/"add a single hour to your life." As the final verse of chapter 6 says, "Do not worry about tomorrow... each day has enough trouble of its own." Our worry about the future does not change anything. God is greater than what is weighing on us, so seek and trust him.

Father God, help me to trust you instead of worrying. Give me faith to know that you will provide for my needs and help me to surrender the future to you. Amen.

What verse on worry can you write down on a 3x5 card and place where you will see it multiple times today?

Matthew 28:20. For I am with you ALWAYS! Even to the end of the age.

I like the: Proverbs 3:5-6: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight".

n

nIt reminds me that I am not all knowing, but HE is. Imagine if I knew all, I wouldn't be worried because I'd have all of the answers and understanding. However, that would not allow me to have faith or believe in His ability to do all for me.

nThe word "submit" is used and was also recently reflected on in our connection group. This term has so much emotion connected to it. For me, with my relationship with God, it's an act of trust and love knowing that he loves me and cares for my well being. How easy is it to submit in our lives to those that you have faith in and should have your best interest in, only to find that they don't. It could be a doctor that you're hoping has an answer or a friend that you get advice from or a boss working behind the scenes for your next promotion. If we submit to these whom are less worthy, why not submit to the One that has every intention of our well being and capabilities to fulfill all of our needs.

nI find myself worrying more than I should. My career entails risk management and that feeling of uncertainty and prediction causes those actions and need for certainty to overflow into the way that I live day to day or think of the future.

nLord, teach me to trust you more than I trust those of this world and show me the path you've laid out to me and have faith in that path whether it is my right to see it or not. Amen.
