Mark 14:22-52

There are many stories which are reiterated multiple times throughout the Bible. The story of the exodus is actually told more than any other. As Jesus experienced his last night on Earth, he did it while celebrating the exodus meal of the Passover. Jesus shockingly took a meal which had been repeated for well over a thousand years and transformed it. His first change was to make the meal not about looking back to Egypt but instead looking forward to his death. The work of God at the exodus would be overshadowed by the greater work he was doing in Jesus. The deliverance of Israel from Egyptian slavery would now be eclipsed by deliverance from sin and the grave.

The second change Jesus made was to make the central character not a slaughtered lamb but a slain savior. This salvation came at the cost of Jesus’ life and occurred with great agony. Notice verses 33-34 using the words distress, trouble, overwhelmed, sorrow, and death. The Passover meal was taken once a year by the nation of Israel while Jesus’ meal is taken regularly when the church gathers. It is a way for us to remember what Christ has done and remember that our salvation, deliverance, and exodus occurred only through him.

Father God, thank you for delivering me from sin, death, and the grave. Help me to always remember what Christ has accomplished for me. Amen.

How should the significance of communion affect your attitude toward taking it?
