Mark 11:1-26

C.S. Lewis wrote that Jesus is either a liar, lord, or lunatic. Often people want to think that Jesus was simply a good man and a great moral teacher, but the words of Jesus do not leave us with those options. We have to take seriously the claims Jesus made about himself. As Jesus entered Jerusalem on the back of a donkey, it was clear to the crowds that he was proclaiming himself king. He was arriving as the promised Messiah King who would bring salvation. In the judgment on the fig tree, he proclaimed himself to be king over all creation. Finally, in his cleansing of the temple he revealed that he was YHWH and that the temple was his. Who Jesus is, Lord over everything, gives him the right to do what he does. Because of who Jesus is, he can cleanse the world of sin and unrighteousness. He can grant eternal life or judgment depending on what people do with him. His greatness supersedes everything else and our response should be to continually humble ourselves before him.

One specific way that Christ’s greatness should affect our lives is prayer. Jesus challenges his followers in Mark 11:22- 25 to reveal their faith through prayer. Since he is our faithful high priest who is ready to both intercede and respond to our requests, prayer should be a routine habit. We are to pray, believe, and see what God is going to do. We are to trust Jesus with our lives and with our daily needs. We can and should do this, because of who he is.

Father God, help me to continually rely upon you in prayer. Christ is my king, so help me to submit to him and live for his glory. Amen.

How does your prayer life reveal the greatness of God?
