Mark 15:1-47
Consider what Jesus was willing to undergo for us on his last day on Earth. Despite being a king and deserving submission, obedience, and reverence, Jesus received none of this. He was dressed up in a Halloween-like king costume and was flogged, mocked, struck, spit on, and then crucified. Rather than the crowds bowing down, they jeered him. They, along with Pilate, missed who Jesus was. The religious leaders saw him as someone upsetting the status quo, rather than the Savior who would upend all of reality. The crowds saw him as entertainment, rather than the one who was voluntarily sacrificing himself for their sins. They failed to see Jesus’ true identity and therefore missed out on what he had for them.
As we consider what Christ did on the cross, what sorrow should fill our hearts for those who saw the life of Jesus but failed to understand who he was. Then as we look to those in our lives who are missing Jesus, what sorrow and urgency should fill our hearts that they might come to trust in Jesus. All that Jesus has done for us should lead us to share what he has done in our lives with others. We are to invite others to be a part of what God has done in our lives, as we seek to be disciples who make disciples.
Father God, thank you that Christ is my king. Help me to live surrendered to him and share who he is and what he has done. Amen.
Why do we so easily forget the immensity of Christ’s sacrifice for us, and thus fail to respond fully to what he has done?
