Matthew 1:1-2:12
A new year creates new opportunities. We can commit to new habits and new behaviors that will improve or destroy our lives. One of the best commitments we can make is to spend time with God. As we embark on a year of reading through the New Testament, we will discover the central place Christ is to play in our lives. Matthew’s gospel begins by looking back in history. He shows that Jesus is the culmination of the promises of God made to Abraham, David, and spoken through the prophets. 2 Corinthians 1:20 tells us, “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are ‘Yes’ in Christ. And so through him the ‘Amen’ is spoken by us to the glory of God.” All that God spoke in the Old and New Testaments culminates in Christ. Similarly, our lives are to be all about him.
We can make many great commitments this year, but the greatest one we can make is to Jesus. He is not just the central reality of Scripture but the center of the universe. Notice as the Magi visit baby Jesus in chapter two, it shows us he is not just the answer to Israel’s needs (chapter 1) but of the world. So let us be like the Magi who come to Jesus and worship him. This should not just be a one-time journey from the east, but a daily commitment to the one who is greater than all.
Father God, thank you for your Son. Help me to live committed to making him the greatest reality in my life. Amen.
What step can you take today to make Jesus the most important thing in your life?

I need to spend more time with Him. Every day! So I can get to know Him better and better.
I need to generally talk to God more, and practice listening when he tells me things
