Being a good listener is a necessary part of the Christian life. The psalms, the prophets (especially Isaiah and Jeremiah), and now Jesus tell us the necessity of listening well. Sure, we should listen to people, but the focus today is learning to hear from God. We can be great at listening to friends, but how well do we hear from God? Jesus often spoke in parables which were confusing to many who heard them, but, to those who leaned in and sought understanding, they learned truths about God and his kingdom. The disciples continuously sought their meanings by asking Jesus for understanding. They asked Jesus for wisdom, while most of the crowds walked away confused. The difference between the two groups was the way they listened.

Those who sought truth received it. Those who did not seek truth walked away with nothing. We need to make sure we are seeking truth and, where we do not understand, seek God. God has all truth, he wants his children to know and walk in the truth, so let us seek his help to listen well.

Father God, give me ears to hear from you. Help me to meditate upon your Scriptures, be led by your Spirit, and live out what you tell me to do. Amen.

How can you learn to listen better to God?
