Job 12:1-14:22
We can probably all remember times when people told us completely unhelpful things. I can remember going into my son’s first MRI, before we knew he had a brain tumor, and someone telling me they were sure that nothing was wrong. Nope! We constantly have people, who maybe with the best of intentions, tell us things that are either wrong, insensitive, or unhelpful. This is where Job finds himself. He is surrounded by friends who think they are telling him the truth, and thus being of great value, but are speaking unhelpful lies.
An important skill we need to learn is discernment. The ability to determine whether what someone says is true, helpful, and worthy of being received; or unhelpful, untrue, and should be rejected. Ultimately, we need God's word to help us judge what others say, we need God's Spirit to help lead us into all truth, and we need wise counselors (unlike Job's friends) who can help us evaluate things to which the Bible may not directly speak. It is critical that we learn to know and walk in the truth, because this is the path to freedom and abundant life.
Father God, give me wisdom to know and live your truth. Help me not to listen to the lies of my world, or the deceitfulness of my heart, but respond to you. Enable your Spirit to lead me into all truth and give me the ability to respond rightly to what you say. Amen.
When was a time in your life where you received unhelpful counsel? How did you respond? How can you better respond to future situations like that?
