Exodus 16:1-19:25
Good teachers reiterate the same lessons multiple times. They recognize their students are quick to forget what they learned and therefore, teach through repetition. The same is true with the best teacher, God. From a few days after the Israelites left Egypt until months, years, and decades later, they continued to struggle with complaining and grumbling. To teach them, God implemented a series of reminders. These reminders were meant to be a spotlight on his goodness and grace when the people were struggling to make sense of their circumstances. He has already given them the Passover as a reminder of his saving work, and now tells them to collect manna in a jar and write a scroll that describes the victory over the Amalekites. The manna is a reminder of God's power in faithfully providing daily provision for his people. It is a tangible reminder that God gives daily bread. The scroll recounting the battle is a reminder of God's power and deliverance. When they see the scroll the people can remember that God is greater than anything that can come against them.
There is no enemy and no obstacle which God cannot overcome. God continually taught Israel, and by extension, us that we do not need to complain because God will provide, save, and deliver. So let us learn from the best teacher and embrace the lessons he longs for us to learn.
Father God, help me to remember all that you have done. Help me to be a good student as you seek to teach me. In moments of darkness and doubt, help me to remember your faithfulness. Amen.
How could you become a better student of God?
