Job 38:1-40:5

After thirty-seven chapters of people speaking in Job, God finally intervenes. God begins by declaring his superiority over everything. He wants Job to understand that he is God, and Job is not. As God, he created the world and sustains everything. As God, he knows all things and humans do not. Job is forced to acknowledge he was wrong in claiming God was unjust. He thought God was being unfair to him when Job was speaking about things of which he knew nothing.

Like Job, we can often put ourselves in the place of God. We think if we were in control of the universe, we would do something differently, when we have no idea. We worship a good God who created the best possible universe so, in humility, we need to submit before him. We can wonder and question why things are the way they are, but ultimately, we need to rest on the fact that thankfully God is God and we are not─and what peace that brings.

Father God, thank you that you are the sovereign king over the universe. Help me to rest in this fact and not play god. Help me to be humble before you and others, and rest in your grace, mercy, and love. Amen.

Where in life are you playing god rather than allowing God to be God?
