2 Kings 16:19-20; 2 Chronicles 28:26-27; Isaiah 13:1-16:14

What is the most powerful thing you have experienced? It may be a hurricane, a form of technology, a person, or a country. Isaiah confronts us with the transitory nature of all earthly power. We see various world empires, which despite seeming to be permanent and indestructible, are nothing compared to the power of God. Babylon, who is now subservient to Assyria, would ultimately rise as the dominant world power within a century. However, Babylon’s destruction is prophesied. God then says of Assyria (the dominant world power of the era), "I will crush the Assyrian in my land...I will trample him down" (Isaiah 14:25). Finally, the destruction of the Philistines and Moabites (closer in geographical proximity to Israel) is described. What seemed so powerful would be torn down to nothing.

Everything of earthly power is like these nations. No matter how strong and permanent they may seem to be, they are nothing compared to the power of God. Therefore, let us not put our hope, confidence, or even fear towards earthly powers; instead let us put our faith in God alone.

Father God, thank you for your greatness. You say that the nations of the world are like a drop of water in a bucket in the grand scheme of eternity. Help me to remember your surpassing greatness compared to everything else and serve you alone. Amen.

What overwhelming situation are you facing where you need to remember God’s superiority and power?
