2 Corinthians 6:14-10:18

If asked whether you are generous, how would you respond? Most of us would probably say yes, but are we really? In Paul's second letter to the church in Corinth, he deals extensively with the idea of generosity. Paul says that true generosity is first a character trait and not just an occasional act. Generosity is marked by a consistent attitude rather than simply giving when we have extra. We are to cultivate a heart that desires to always reach out into our broken world and share what God has given to us. Giving is a process that is directed by God. We need to seek God and, then as God leads, respond to the needs of others. As with everything in life when we are trying to determine what to give, we should ask God to direct the timing and the amount. We should not do what feels comfortable; instead, we should obey God’s direction. Finally, giving is to be done cheerfully.

Giving should not be an arduous task that we detest but rather something we delight in as we are used by God to meet the needs of others. God has given us such much, so let us be generous with all the good gifts he has given to us. Let us choose to be generous, seek God’s lead, and embrace the joy of giving.

Father God, thanks for your generosity to me. As I receive from you, help me to faithfully share with others. Give me a heart that delights in giving rather than just receiving. Amen.

How could you more intentionally pursue a heart of generosity?
