Romans 11:1-14:23

Why do you do what you do? As you consider your actions, what are your motivations? Most people tend to be motivated by feeling good, by the pursuit of comfort, and by pleasing people. God calls us to be motivated by what he has done for us. Paul spends the first eleven chapters of Romans detailing what God has done to deal with our predicament of sin. He finished this section by speaking of God’s plan for the Jewish people. Despite God’s agenda being directed through a multiethnic church, he still has a special place for Israel. Truths like this may seem interesting but completely irrelevant to our lives.

In Romans 12 through the end of the book, we see theology becomes the foundation for our behavior/ethics and God’s truth leads us to offering our lives as living sacrifices. We are to surrender our will, desires, and actions to God. We are to see ourselves as a lamb on an altar, fully offered to God. We are no longer our own masters but are instead to live for him. As we continue through Romans, we see that this challenges us to resist the ways of the world, serve others, love unconditionally, submit to our governing authorities, and pursue unity over being right in amoral issues. Every area of our lives is to be transformed because of who God is, what he has done for us, and the new relationship we have with him.

Father God, help me to live for you. Help me to be a living sacrifice for your will and your ways. Amen.

How should seeing yourself as a living sacrifice affect the way you live today?
