Romans 2:1-4:25

Our world loves to speak of human rights and dignity. What gives us rights or value at all? The only sure foundation for these things is an eternal God. We are not valuable because we evolved or because others say we are important, rather, God tells us that every human has dignity, value, and worth. This beautiful truth is also complemented by the fact that we are all sinners. Paul tells us in Romans 3 that we are all sinners under God’s wrath. This is true of Jews and Gentiles. Some in the early church thought Jews were superior since they had received the Old Covenant. Romans refutes this by showing all people are equally sinful but can also be equally declared righteous through God’s grace. Abraham is the center of Paul’s argument about salvation because he was declared righteous before circumcision (thus before taking on the sign of the Jewish people). He is the model for Jews and Gentiles that salvation is by grace through faith.

We always need to remember there is nothing we need except Jesus; he is the only answer to our deepest needs. We do not need to jump through work harder or be better, we just need to receive his grace by faith. We all live in sin and are under judgment and wrath. God desires for everyone to respond to him and live under his grace and righteousness.

Father God, thank you for the grace I have in Jesus. Help me to remember it is through him that I can be saved and rest in the assurance that brings. Amen.

What causes you to doubt that Jesus’ death and resurrection are sufficient for your salvation?
