No one wants to be a servant; everyone wants to be the boss. This is true in our world and even more so in the Roman Empire. To be a servant was demeaning and looked down upon, but Jesus radically reinterpreted the concept of serving. Near the end of Jesus’ life, he intentionally served his disciples. He modeled this by washing their feet. He voluntarily took upon himself the position of a slave to show that "he loved them to the end" (John 13:1). He then challenged them to follow his example by washing each other's feet and taking on the position of servant. What a powerful display of service! Yet how quickly the disciples forgot it.

Not long after Jesus’ service, Luke 22 tells us the disciples were once again arguing over which of them was the greatest. Jesus gave them an example and then taught them once again true greatness is found in service not through the assertion of rights and self. Jesus radically showed that true life does not come by putting ourselves first but by seeking to serve others. So, let us follow in the footsteps of Jesus and never forget, we are servants.

Father God, help me to serve like Jesus. Help me to remember the example of Jesus and seek to put the needs of others before my own. Amen.

Where in life do you need to change from seeking to be served to being a servant?
