Luke 12:35-13:21; John 9:1-41
The average person watches about three hours of TV a day and spends another two hours on social media. Our eyes are constantly attentive to what is happening in our world and the lives of our friends, but are we equally attentive to the things of God? One of Jesus’ repeated themes is that of watchfulness. As followers of Jesus, we are to live with our eyes looking for his return. Jesus says that we are to be like servants with lamps waiting for the master to return, and likewise, managers who serve well knowing the master is coming. Both illustrations affirm we are to live motivated by Christ's return.
We are not running on a proverbial hamster wheel; instead, we are waiting for the culmination of history. There is no room for apathy, laziness, or self-centeredness because the end is coming. To live for ourselves, for comfort, for money, or fame, is to live far too shallowly when we can conscientiously know Christ, our master, is coming back to Earth. So let us have eyes open for the signs of his return, open to how he is working in and through us, and eyes open and watching for his reappearance.
Father God, help me to live ready for Jesus' return. Help me to not waste my life, my time, talents, or treasure─but use all things for your glory. Amen.
How well are you watching for Christ’s return? How would a greater sense of watchfulness impact your life?
